Option 1

Safety Pilot

Balearic Helicopters are happy to supply you with a local flight instructor. This is the most economical and hassle free option if you just want to fly around Mallorca for a few hours whilst on holiday.

The instructor can do all the local radio and procedures for you, as well as flight planning. Also, having an instructor on board gives you the option to stop off at one of our many landing sites for a coffee or spot of lunch.

Of course, in the R44, you can bring along 2 passengers.

All you need to bring is your licence, medical and Passport (for Airport Security)

Option 2

Self Fly Hire

First you will receive a ground brief on the local area, airspace and local regulations then you will have a simple check-ride with one of our Flight instructors who can clear you to fly the R44. Afterwards you are free to fly around Mallorca or visit the other Balearic Islands at your leisure.

Self-Fly Hire Check

Before you arrive we can email you a PDF file of information, local procedures and regulations and charts for Mallorca, you’ll need to read this before you arrive.

The SFH Check starts with a Ground Briefing from an Instructor on pre-flight procedures, airfield operations and local regulations. Then you will fly a Self-Fly Hire Check Flight.

The Self Fly Hire Check Flight lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour and is based on general handling, local reporting points and emergency procedures.

We can lend you all the necessary charts and maps whilst you are here.

Once you’ve completed the Self Fly Hire Check and your instructor is happy to sign you off you’ll need to complete all the paperwork and then you are eligible to Self Fly Hire.

The Self Fly Hire Check is valid for 6 months, or expiry of PC or Medical, whichever comes first, and you can Self Fly Hire providing you can demonstrate that you have flown a helicopter, of that type, within the previous 28 days. This does not necessarily mean with Balearic Helicopters and your Logbook is sufficient to show currency on type.

The Self Fly Hire Check authorises you to fly to and from our base, Aerodromo Son Bonet

28 Day Circuit Check

If you haven’t flown on the type within the previous 28 days you’ll need to complete a Circuit Check, a quick couple of circuits, take-offs and landings with an Instructor who will be able to revalidate the Self Fly Hire Check.

Off Site Landing Check

If you want to land off site, either private landing site or another airport you’ll need to complete additional training as part of the Self Fly Hire Check, namely confined area operations. If landing at an airport other than Aerodromo Son Bonet then you’ll need further ground briefings on each individual airport.

All off site landings must be authorised, in writing by the Base Manager before the flight.

What to bring?

  • Current & Original EASA Pilots Licence and Type Rating
  • Current & Original EASA Medical (Class 1 or 2)
  • Logbook
  • Passport (for Airport Security)
  • Sunglasses!
