CAA FTROL Radiotelephony Course

The Flight Radiotelephony Operator's Licence (FRTOL) authorises you to operate an Aircraft Radio Station in a UK registered aircraft.
The licence can be held as a standalone licence, but is normally held in conjunction with another Flight Crew licence, such as an EASA PPL.
The licence is required regardless of aircraft type, be it helicopter or aircraft.
To be eligible for the Radiotelephony Licence you must meet the following requirements:

Balearic Helicopters FRTOL Course

Before you arrive you’ll be sent various course materials to study for the course.  This includes the ground school notes and also the CAP 413, CAA Radiotelephony Manual, on which the training is based.

The course is 1 day and starts with ground school required for communications and radiotelephony.  There is then a CAA Communications Ground Exam to pass, 75% pass mark is required. 

After a short break for lunch there is the ground school for the practical, oral exam.  The practical exam is based on a computer simulation of a flight through various scenarios (Class A airspace, MATZ penetration, various emergencies and also flight following procedures).

After successfully completing the training and testing the paperwork will be sent to the CAA.  This licence can also be used towards your ICAO English Language Proficiency, now a mandatory requirement to fly in the EU. The whole course, including training and testing can be completed on site in Mallorca.

A UK FRTOL issued after 17 September 2012, is valid for life, provided that your language proficiency endorsement is current.
